Thought for the week. We have all heard about the Biblical 10 Commandments which were written by Jesus on a tablet of stone. These were given to us for a reason to live by & if we do, then this world would be a better place. Last week we looked at the 5th commandment & this week we will continue on & have a look at the 6th commandment. In Exodus 20:13 we read," Thou shalt not kill." 4 words only & this commandment is one of the shortest commandments of the 10 given. The dictionary defines the word "kill" as meaning, the act of terminating a life.
Almost every day you can turn on the TV & hear of another murder where a life or lives have been terminated. These days it's quite common really & so much so that you can become quite blase about it, but with every life taken, someone has shown total disreguard towards God's 6th commanment,"Thou shalt not kill." Jesus tells us that if you break just one cammandment then you are guilty of breaking them all. Jesus has given us the 10 commandments as a guide to live by & severe penalties await those who take no heed at all to these commandments.
Mrs E G White, writing in Patriarchs & Prophets P308 says this regarding the 6th commandment," All acts of injustice that tend to shorten life; the spirit of hatred & revenge, or the indulgence of any passion that leads to injurious acts towards others or causes us to even to wish them harm( for whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer); a selfish neglect of caring for the needy or suffering; all self indulgence or unnecessary deprivation or excessive labour that tends to injure health; all these are, to a greater or less degree, violations of the 6th commandment".
In Matthew Henry's Bible Commentary regarding the 6th commandment it says," It does not forbid killing in lawful war or in our own self defence, but it forbids all malice & hatred to a person of any personal revenge".
These commandments from Jesus are not new but the same as given to Moses on Mt Sinai & even though they could be classified as ancient, they are still applicable to us today.
